Tad with the Cub Scouts.
Yellow Leafs
The yellow leaves are the larger ones near the root. What are the causes of yellow leafs?

Tad here with the cub scouts.
Last year there was an article in "Boys Life" about a farmer in the eastern states (or mid west) who had metal molds of peoples heads. This was back in the 20s or 30s. It stated that the mold was clamped on and would eventually burst from the pressure of the growing pumpkin. What I thought was very interesting is, that after the pumpkin would "break out of the mold" it would hold the shape of the mold in proportion as it continued to grow.
I have been searching Ebay for pumpkin molds to do this with the Scouts, so if anyone knows where we could get one or more, I would like to know. Also if any one knows how to go about making them.
I will pull out the copy of the article and see if it is posted online somewhere.

Question on yellowing of the leaves. I have several leaves that are turning yellow. Is this due to age? Too much water? Or something else.
Thanks

Hi Dave,
I've cut the main vine directly after the pumpkin on several plants so far and it really helps to avoid stem stress. Also, I've noticed no effect on the growth rate of the pumpkin, neither positive, nor negative.

In what way are they turning yellow? Is it from the inside out to the edges, or mainly on the edges? Do they look drier, or just as healthy as before? Is it the leaves nearest the stump or does the yellowing appear at random? k

I found some "vegiforms" Clear plastic mods for use on Gourds, melons, globe squash, pumpkins, eggplant???, and other round fruits and vegies. They also have molds for cucumbers.
The Canning Shop in Berkeley, CA 800 544-3373 fax 510 5277718
We are going to check them out, they are about 30 minutes from us.

I've tried the veggie-forms on AGs in years past - they fill the mold overnight and it's nearly impossible to remove the mold. The fruit almost always snapped off while I wrestled with it. The molds did work well on lesser growing veggies, though.

Just as with Giant Pumpkins there must be a recognized world record for Long Gourds.
If anyone knows the LG world record or where I can find a written record------please email me privately.
Thank you--Al Eaton

Hi Al
As I recall that record belongs to Ray Waterman. Do a search for the World
Pumpkin Confederation. (WPC) I am pretty sure he once had it, if he doesn't
still. If you don't hear anything I can look through my old papers and I am sure
I have the paper where he set it. Seems like it was around 8 feet long.
Good Luck

Al,
Are you wondering if you are a possible contender? That sounds exciting! I put out an email to a guy who keeps up with that kind of thing. I'll let you know what he says if he returns the email.

Seems to me I read a thread last year about a long gourd over 9 feet long. I'll try doing a search.
Here's a link on growing them:
http://www.twincreek.com/gourds/growing.htm
I'd be interested in knowing what the largest Zucca Melon is. There are some being grown in the Similkameen Valley in Keremeos, B.C.
I recall seeing a truckload of them in the 1950's stacked like cordwood on their way to the cannery in New Westminster. They must have been at least 6 feet long and 12-16" in diameter. They were used to make candied fruit for baking.

A guy from bigpumpkins.com named Mat Fox wrote to me with this information. He is well known on BP.com for keeping track of the records. This is what he said...
"the length record for long guord is 110 5/8 inches . It was set by peter
waterman in 1994 in NY."
I hope you have a winner, Al!
