Re: deer eating pumpkins
I had a great Wentzell growing that fought off getting the vines eaten in the
first few weeks of plant growth by wood chucks. Even after being three weeks
behind because of the hungry chucks the pumpkin took off. It then stopped
growing at 69"s. The vine coming out of the pumpkin was as big around as my
forarm. I was proud. It was big enough to obscure the three inch in diameter
hole the squirrels and probably chipmunks help make under the forearm sized
vine. So next year I not only have to put the chicken wire up as the plant
initially develops I also have to construct a secure PCV and half inch square wire
barrier for keeping the varmints out. Ah more winter projects.
