Wood ashes, like manure and other organic supplements, should be added
during the off-season, and allowed to leach somewhat with rainwater. I
would not apply wood ashes directly to the patch this time of year.
As always, you should test your soil for pH. If you add wood ashes in the
winter, test your soil in the spring and see how you're doing.
It should be noted that wood ashes will leach through certain soils with
enough rainwater, so they may not do much in terms of nutrient value.
Again, a soil test should reveal how you're doing.

I've heard of growers totally ruining their patch by adding wood ash.
One person, on this list I believe, added wood ash to his patch and sent
the ph to over 9....not good. Be very careful.

Wood ashes are an excellent source of potash, and can also help to raise
your soil's pH if you have acidic soil.

I have read that wood ashes from a wood stove placed on your garden
during
winter and tilled into the soil is good for pumpkin growth. Anyone else
heard of this or have any opinions about this theory?
Thanks,
Mark
