Re: Patch Update - Mimi The Magnificent - Part Two

Things have gone wrong? Good grief man. Nice looking patch there.
No deer eating the ends off the vines? I have several with those types
of "injuries". No pumpkins even set on those because they have to recover
first. Then a gopher chewed off the main root just underground killing
one plant totally just before it was going to set some fruit.

I will be lucky to get a 100lb one this year everything is so late.
My first transplant got killed by a late frost. So I had to start over in
the middle of May.

Maybe I can at least get some seeds for next year out of this year's crop.
Think you have problems....oh, woe is me, no monster pumpkin this year.

A few things have gone wrong in the pumpkin patch. Actually, I
have a long list. The heat wave that fried the tips off the
mains on two plants; the sag lines that showed up a few days
later on three pumpkins; The best pumpkin growing into the
vine and partially tearing off the main - then doing it again
five days later; the coon gouging graffiti on one pumpkin, the
rat gnawing chunks out of another and the list goes on and on.

It doesn't help my self-confidence that the two pumpkins my
daughters are growing are doing better than mine are. Pumpkins
seem to relate better to little girls - so this doesn't bother
me much - really.

Hey, I'm not complaining, I've seen the dairies of other
growers - some with pumpkins down, some who have lost all of
their plants - season over. I'm one of the lucky ones. I
still have pumpkins alive in the patch and they are all still
growing....
So after each insult or injury to my patch - I thank the
pumpkin gods for their generosity and benign tolerance of my
sloppy growing practices. Never anger the pumpkin gods -
capricious and unforgiving they are and down-right mean they
can be....
