If you really want to take a chance on that slow grower then water the heck
out of it, I mean REALLY water it, and give it a good dose of fertilizer. You
will be at risk of blowing it up, but if they don't blow, you should get some
really good gains. These things take ALOT of water, and I mean ALOT, in order
to stay growing at a high rate so my suggestion would be to take the chance.
It is a learning experience and I learned by blowing up 3 pumpkins late last
year by forgetting that the water was on and giving them a huge dose of water
and the next day... POP! It really made me realize that even though I thought
I was heavily watering, I wasn't even coming close to their needs. Make sure
the whole plant is getting water as well. I have only been growing a few
years, but I have learned that what I used to think was a lot of water was not
nearly enough and I added 20% to my PB last year and hope to do the same again
this year (however the
weather has been cruddy). If your ground is already "wet" than I guess this
isn't your issue, however I would guess it is the need for water more than
anything else that is slowing the growth. Good luck!
