   It is also a good idea to take a toothbrush and brush away any  soft 
material, flush with clean water, let dry and then apply the Daconi
l.

Debbie,  drying out the stem with the fan is good.  I would spray the stem  
with a good fungicide such as Daconil or Captan.  You can even make a  
paste 
and paint it on and you should have no problems.  I use some  Borax last 
year 
out of despesparation because of a large stem split.   It seemed to work, 
and 
knowing that Boxax  has some anti-fungus  properties you probably can use 
it 
as well.
