Errol,
I grew up on a cattle ranch in Milner, just west of Steamboat. I went to
school in Ft. Fun (CSU). We took over my DEAR WIFE's place in Indiana @
2001. We had two sayings back home..."I hope Summer lands on a weekend this
year." And, "You don't lose your girlfriend in Milner, you just lose your
turn."
I'm teaching my kids to trap, hunt, fish, garden, drive a combine, haul hay,
and grow AG's here in the Hoosier State. People here still have common
sense, family values, religion, manners, and knowledge of the land. However,
It as flat as a pancake, humid as hell, and there are not any elk on my
place as far as I can tell.
Peace,
Steve Haberman

Hi Steve,
I understand that! I have 1/2 a dozen live traps from skunk size up
to large dog caught lots of skunks but forget about catching foxes or
coyotes, the coyotes aren't as bad as a domestic dog which just kills
for the fun but they do get my young sheep and goats and 2 years ago
a pack of coyotes wiped out all 15 of the barn cats. When my boys
watched a coyote get our house cat that just had a $400 vet bill the
#4 traps (SHHHH!) came out and I got her 2 days later.
That law made live traps and snares (if they had the stop on them so
it wouldn't hurt them...) the only traps you could use but the .06 is
still the most effective and out of my neighbors all the old timers
have died that kept the predators under control and now the new
people think there cute and feed them which makes them unafraid of
humans and then they get upset when they kill their cats and dogs!
The deer have never bothered my acre garden before, not much anyway!
(At least they left my pumpkins alone till this year!) They would
clean the velvet off of their antlers on my wind break trees and
break them sometimes.
And if you were around the Aspen area you know how quick the summers
are and you have no time for error on the garden, I'm not as high as
Aspen but I am at 7000' on the High Plains...
I still love it here and as long as I have a lot of acreage between
me and all of the new people moving in I will preferably keep
struggling with the animals they're safer! And there is always next
year for that big pumpkin!
Errol
