First timer questions

2 questions:      

1. How long after pollination can I feel confident that my pumpkin will not
abort? I pollinated on July 26 and its growing and looks great. I would like
to remove other 3 pumpkins on the plant but am wondering if I should wait
awhile. BTW, I'm in Massachusetts.

2. Do the tap roots that are beyond the pumpkin on the same vine contribute
to the pumpkins growth or am I wasting my time fertilizing those?
