Greetings,
What a shock I had last night to come home and find one my better
pumpkins had exploded. I had read a lot about this phenom. here on the
computer but thought that it was paranoid pumpkin talk. Does anyone know
what causes this? Is it a sign of a soil nutrient/fertalizer problem?
It was as if the fruit was made of safety glass, and someone had shot a
bullet at it.
It also amazes me what internal preasure these things have. The
other day when cutting some extras from the vine, I sliced open a pumpkin
to inspect the inside. When the knife went in the fruit seemed to
immediately split open. Oh well, I just hope this doesn't happen too many
more times.

Had a 400 pounder split at the blossom end two days ago....... It was my
biggest one at 114.5 and growing 1.5 inches a day. Some just do not develop
a thick enough wall at the blossom end to survive. There is a soil
deficiency, (either Calcium or Mag can't remember which), of that encourages
this but I do not have either. Have two others, one looks promising.
