squirrels

Hello. Newbie here. Live on Long Island NY. [My wife is an
accomplished vegetable gardener,
tho with only casual experience with pumpkins].

I planted 3 hills of Big Moon (var of C. Maxima,
according to the mailing list archives).
I got a late start, and for a while thought it looked like
plenty of fun just watching the vines grow. However, the first
fruits have been fertilized and the plants seem determined. I clear
ground in front of them, dig in bagged manure, feed w/Miracle Grow.

In the past (smaller variety), the main problem has been squirrels
and racoons chewing into maturing fruit.
Any suggestions on preventing this?

(I'm not up to speed on the pumpkin mailing list yet - plz include
a direct response to kittyv@idt.net -- thanks!!)
