Dan,
For most greenhouse crops, a positive response has been recorded for
increases in CO2 levels of up to the range of 1000 to 1500ppm
(0.1-0.15%). Beyond this, very little positive response has been noted.
Other factors such as light and temperature affect photosynthetic rate,
thus CO2 uptake.
Unsafe levels for humans occurs near 5000ppm or 0.5%. 3% would be 30,000
ppm and would not be a safe environment for a poor pumpkin grower. But,
as you say, much of this CO2 would dissapate with proper ventilation.
And for those living in industrial areas where large amounts of fuel
are combusted, the actual level of CO2 will often exceed 400ppm.
