John,
Small cracks that are sapping are not usually a problem. You can put a
little captan on them. Usually the sap dries up and hardens....you don't have
to remove it if you don't want. A soft spot is a different matter....this
must be removed. Covering the spot with captan will not stop it. If you get a
small soft spot in the pumpkin stem or the pumpkin itself, take a toothbrush
and remove all soft material, flush with water let dry, coat with a thin coat
of captan and keep dry.
