MILK FED PUMPKINS

The story of milk fed pumpkins originated here in the Ottawa Valley.

My great great grandfather was a farmer. Like all small time farmers of
that era he kept a manure pile behind the barn. Pumpkin seeds, which came
from pumpkins fed to the stock, often voluntarily germinated in the manure
pile. Often they grew quite well.

The milk produced by his small herd was used only by the family and stock.
Because of lack of transportation and a lack of close-by urban development
there was no off-the-farm market for milk.

The excess milk was often dumped on the manure pile. He won a prize at a
local fair with a big pumpkin one year and claimed "it was milk-fed".

All the best!
