Cutting back vines

Pumpkin People,

The other day while in my patch I decided that it was time to cut
back on my pumpkins, and stay with the long termers. When doing this I
also cut out quite a bit of vine. I am quite certain that this portion of
vine was not drawing nutrients, as it was running over a gravel driveway,
and there appeared to be no tap roots.
My questions are; Does cutting back on vine have any effect on the
growth of my pumpkin? Could this just be less plant material that has to
be fed by the root system? Also, do I really need to put Captan on the
ends where I cut?

Oh yes,,, Now that I'm in the final bulking up race, what fertalizer
regiem do you recommend? I have been using Peter's 20-20-20 every couple
of weeks.
                               Thanks,
                               Chris Andersen
