Pumpkineers,
It has been a while since my last update, so here goes..
Holland 879 plant was taken out today, as every pumpkin that started,
seemed very hard, ribbed, and never really grew larger than a
basketball.. I was very puzzled by it.. It is real sad to take out 850
sq ft of a plant on August 2nd, but it can only help its neigbor, the
Andersen 815 try and surge forward...
Andersen 815 is doing great, although the pumpkins are still not
pumpkins.. they are squash.. I have come outof the closet.. heehee
I had 3 squash left on this plant, but today I culled a 98 pound squash
from the plant.. It was set on a second main, but had slowed to a 2-3
inch OTT pace, so it had to go..
The second largest fruit is now at 192 " OTT, and is set on a secondary
vine.. I may try to grow this one, and take it to the state fair here in
Pennsylvania, which is the Bloomsburg Fair, held in September.. It goes
app. 159 pounds right now, and looks real nice.. Might get the early
cull if all doesnt go well for the # 1 fruit later down the road..
The largest is a monster.. No remeber , I had a 70 pound pumpkin last
year, so having culled of a 98 pounder today, and looking at another
closing in on 200 pounds I find quite amazing, but this one is going for
the world squash record.. The "Dark Horse" is now at 238 " OTT, which
measures out according to Len Stelfplug's chart at 288 pounds.. If I can
sustain half the growth I have now through August, and mid September, I
can have a pretty big monster.. Shape, vine position, and everything
about this guord is beautiful. I have one scar on its top side, but am
not concerned in the least, as I added some captan paste tonight, for
insurance purposes.. Watering a ton these days, as I think it is in the
neighborhood of 100-150 gallons a day on a 680 sq ft plant.. I am
putting 10 gallons of 20-20-20 on the plant every 3-5 days, and am
wondering if anyone onhere has as rigorous a fertilzer schedule.. This
is a 600 sq ft plant, and gets 10 gallons of 20-20-20 every 3-5 days..
Too much? Too little? How often are you putting the liquid seaweed on
the leaves? weekly?
Thanks for the time, and I am praying for Marv's woodchuck ravaged
garden..
