This has been my experience, too. Although my most recent problem to
figure out was appropriate shelters - we have a lot of heat, plus I use
frequent overhead watering for cooling. Plastic heats up too much;
fabric isn't quite enough...
...anyway, as I was researching this issue, I found some posts from last
year in the archives, and I also had an exchange with Chris Andersen.
Both mentioned that some growers put white sheets over the pumpkins to
be sure the sun doesn't shine directly on them. IF YOU DO THIS, BE SURE
THE PUMPKIN AND SHEET ARE BOTH UNDER YOUR SHADE STRUCTURE! I put the
sheet over one, and forgot to lower one flap on the larger shelter...
the sun got it for a little while and the temperature underneath hit 104
on a mid-80's day.
(I can't seem to avoid cooking these things one way or another!)
A nice side effect of this sheet idea, though, is that I think it
provides some protection from birds and other small varmints.
It is, of course, also important to keep the fabric that is in contact
with the pumpkin dry.
