I had a similar problem this year right at the stump. I used a 4 x 4" gauze
bandage, soaked it in Captan, loaded the hole on the stump with Captan and
plastered it on. I used a small piece of wire temporarly just to hold it in
place, I took the wire off in about two days. It worked great. As the stump grew,
it completely healed.
Im not too sure about wrapping the cloth completely around the whole stump
though, you want to make sure the vine can grow unrestricted. I would definitely
take the rope off now. You can continue to apply more Captan if necessary.
