Rocky,
Talked to Jack Peters about a month ago. He is thinking about making a
custom blend for giant pumpkin growers. Beginning, middle, end formula. I will
let you know if and when the products become available. If you can't find KNO3
to add to the 20-20-20 or a high potash formula, there is no reason why you
can't scatter a small amount of Muriate of Potash under the plant. Keep it off
the leaves and go easy. KCL has about the highest salt index of all
fertilizers. The higher the salt index, the higher the chance of fertilizer
burn. At 61% K you must remember this is powerful stuff and should be
broadcast under the plant at about one third the normal amount of fertilizer
you would normally apply. Potash is necessary for fruit development but if
you over applied the KCL with the high salt index, it would stress the plant
and mature it early. Root pruning, depriving water will cause stress and
mature things. The trick is to keep the stress off the plant. 20-20-20 is not
a bad formula.....if you can't find the products to switch your ratios to
slightly higher N and K, don't worry about it. 20-20-20 is O.K.
