Just returned from 3 patches in Comptche Ca...a coastal town tucked back in
the hills now I am ready to throw in the towel.......these guys are
beginners but are master gardeners...they used only organic ferts....and
have very solid looking pumpkins they are now in the 580-600+ range......i
had to laugh as they were planning to come to our weigh-off in Boonville in
Sept.....i beg them not to cut the pumpkins...told them of the weigh-offs
in EG ,HMB, SF...it is at this time I feel that Records are going to
fall....in the pumpkins from or comrades in Canada and across the
U.S....slightly depressed as mine are no where near this
account.........this beginner luck is brutal!............

There might be an explanation for this.
New gardens peak between 3-10 then begin to decline. Conventional methods
and soil tests work until the garden is over 10 years old. They bottom out
between 18 - 20 years. Advanced organics combined with some conventional non-
organic methods are needed to bring a mature garden back into top production.
Standard Organic methods come close but are not enough. Also, many of the
needed changes are not measured by soil tests.
I would suspect that some Pumpkin growers know this or they are using the
right methods and don't realize it. My Garden is 25 years old and I have been
doing research for 3 years on this subect to restore my garden. About 6 years
ago I came close to finding a solution but didn't realize what I had. Some of
the methods are very old and have been almost lost over the last 50 years.
Others are very new. I hope to write something on this subject within the
next 2 years. (If I'm sucessful) I beleave I'm on to something.
The above comments are my beliefs and may or may not turn out to be true.
