This is my rookie season (southwest of Boston), so take this advice with that
in mind.
I first noticed borers about four weeks ago (i.e already too late). I tried
the slice and dice method and didn't like it at all. Three weeks later those
vines are in as bad a shape as those that had the worst of the borers.
I also tried another tactic, similar to what you seem to be suggesting. I
drilled 1/16 inch holes into the vine, trying to stop in the middle, right at
the point of entry and on either side for two inches at half inch intervals,
then squirted Bug-be-Gone (0.075% diazinon) directly into the holes. I'm not
a fan of spraying, hence my problem with borers, but I felt okay with a low
concentration in a small, localized area. From what I see so far, it worked.
The spots treated this way have not gotten any worse (no splitting, etc.)
Good Luck.
