In 1997, I grew the 1061 Zehr 96. Every pumpkin on the plant developed a
stem split between 70 - 120 pounds and the split eventually went to the
center of the pumpkin. I was not able to save one pumpkin from this plant
even though many started.
I pollinated my 603 Baird 96 with the 1061 and grew the 496 Heyne 97. This
year I planted the 496 Heyne and just today, I noticed the similar stem
split on a pumpkin estimated to weigh 290 pounds. So far, the split has
not gone to the center of this pumpkins. From my experience with the 1061
Zehr, I would not plant another seed from this pumpkin. The bad
characteristics that showed up in its pumpkins were passed along through
its pollen to another generation of pumpkins.
More bad new from the pumpkin patch today as one of the pumpkins on the
520 Heyne developed small holes around the flower end to the cavity. The
pumpkin initially had a great shape, but within the last two weeks it
started to develop a Dill ring ( I assume ) around the flower end of the
pumpkin. As the pumpkin matured, the ribs started to develop. Today, about
a half dozen holes appeared at the junction of the Dill ring and the ribs.
The estimated weight of this pumpkin was about 285 pounds.
Not all is lost, as I still have larger pumpkins. Hopefully, they will
survive another month.
