OK group, I've finally had a pumpkin grow enough to develop a stem
split. Akebono is at 211" OTT and 92 1/2" circ. it split last week and
I pasted it up with captan and have it under cover to keep it dry. When
I was out at the patch yesterday I noticed the split had increased in
depth and the stem was looking a little soft near the end of the split.
It has gone deeper into the flesh of the pumkin as well. I slathered on
more captan and wrapped part of the stem with coban, a kind of self
adhering elastic bandage. Akebono is still gaining about an inch a day
in circumference and I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck
holding these things together once they had gotten to this point. I
figure this one probably won't make it to October but the Puyallup fair
starts September 11 and I might be able to exhibit it there. As far as
the split into the flesh goes it is at an angle that is difficult for me
to see, but I probed it with a straw and it isn't into the cavity yet.
Advice? Taps?
Light a candle and say a prayer?
