Retrieval Day
by Pumpkin Flower
Today we went down to the Fair
To pick up all our entries there
Upon the truck thrown with a shove
With out the gentle way and love
My pumpkin had been loaded on
Just one short week ago at dawn
That day she was a thing of prize
Excitement , hope, glowing in eyes
Today a back ache, chore to tend
Get home for dinner was our end
Unceremoniously plunked
In the front yard ,well almost junked
Her stem got broken, then got tossed
Some where along the line she'd lost
Her sense of wonder, hope, and gleam
Now that she's lost her routing team
She's just a big old orange ball
Perched crookedly as if to fall
Off of the hill there in the yard
That product of my work so hard
It saddens me to see the spot
There in the little garden plot
And wishing I could plug back in
The vine I severed that mornin'
And shuffling along inside
I wondered if her seeds did hide
That perfect mix perhaps to grow
The biggest pumpkin yet to know

pumpkin flower don't be sad
pumkinguy can make you glad
Your pumpkin isn't down and out
Don't sit around and cry or pout
Halloween is almost here
A pumpkins favorite time of year
The pumpkin waits her sculpting fate
The highest honor she can rate
The most beautiful pumpkin in the State
Will illuminate your front yard gate
She'll cast a bright and orange glow
To light the path where children go
When she begins to slump so low
In the pantry you must go
Sitting there quite safe and sound
500 baby seeds abound
Waiting for their turn in Spring
Don't be sad it's time to sing
