SE Mn. Update

After receiving heavy rain every two or three days, and having heat
indexes over 100, it suddenly turned cool in southeast Minnesota. This
year, it was tough to successfully pollinate many pumpkins due to the
rain and heat. Many promising pumpkins died just before they were to
open due to heavy rain, heat, or both. Right now, only seven of the
eleven plants have pumpkin starts. A couple of the other plants might
have a some starting, but it will take another day or two to tell. The
top pumpkins to this point are:

452 Heyne - 200.5 ott = 179 pounds (24 days)
858 Baird - 191.5 ott = 158 pound (24 days)
740 Wray - 183 ott = 139 pounds (22 days)

My best so far has been my 584 Heyne pollinated on July 17 ( Wish it was
pollinated on July 4). After ten days of growth, the circumference was
36 inches; 14 days, 59 inches. This is the best start in all my years of
pumpkin growing.

Last year, I had several pumpkins over 200 pounds and one at 346 pounds.
So, to this point, it has not been a good year for growing LARGE
pumpkins in southeastern Minnesota.
