I bet the bees were scarfing it. I found that 7AM (for instance) is already
way too late (the insects will have stolen all the pollen already).
Put a bag or mesh over the males the evening before they open,
and you'll have unmolested, pollen-full flowers in the morning.
You can tell the day before they open because the petals get tinged with yellow.
Someone else suggested picking the male flowers the day before and putting them
inside in a vase of water.

That's really GREAT!! Congrats!

You'll have to try really hard... I think I set the record last year. I grew three
fully mature AGs, the biggest a whopping 4 1/2 pounds (yes, four and a half).
I can even provide photos of this amazing feat! They were really AGs, starting out
cream colored, maturing to orange. I got the seed from Harris Seed. Where's that
growth log? Whoo-ee, a couple of my leaves reached 15" in diameter, with a vine a
monster 16' long! :-)
Most entrants at Clarence needed a pickup truck bed to carry their cargo,
I had mine on the dashboard! :-)
