My long gourd plants are doing great. I have one gourd on right
now, pollinated on July 23. Measured in at 45" last night and is going at
about 5 inches a day right now. The next week is crucial as I'm looking to
put on at least 3.5 feet. Now, a question for you naturalists. I was up on
my ladder pollinating gourds last night (they bloom at night), when I felt
this buzzing over my shoulder. I turned to see the biggest moth I have ever
seen in my life working the gourd flowers. When I tell you that it was the
size of a small bird, I am not exaggerating. I almost fell off of the
ladder. Later on, I saw two of them working the plants. Now I now that
gourds are usually pollinated by moths, but I've never seen anything like
this. Can anyone out there tell me what it was that I had a close encounter
with?

Well, never considered getting up on the ladder and pollinating my Long
Gourds. Too busy burying Dog & Cat food I guess. The things we do......
Can you imagine what someone must think if they drive by and see someone up
on a ladder at night with a flashlight pollinating flowers? Is guess only
this group could understand what we do. I did see one of those Moths the
other night, they are bigger than a Hummingbird!
Well, think I'll go talk to my Pumpkins. :-)
Good luck with your Gourds. This is the first year I'm growing them.
