Hi everyone,
It has been a pretty frustrating year for me here in Illinois. My plants (both of them) look very healthy with no evidence of
Borers or other pests. The problem is that
even tho I have had several female flowers I have not been able to get any of them to pollinate. This might have been because
when the flowers were open it was in the
upper 90's. I finally have a couple of females that now seem to be growing ( although not yet at the size that they are
guaranteed not to abort).
The dilemma is that the two that seem to be taking are growing towards each other and about to touch each other and grow over
each others vines. I will not be able to
move them enough without cracking the vines. The smaller of the two is a more traditional shape for its size while the larger
one is watermelon shaped. I remember
reading here some concern about watermelon shaped pumpkins. Does anyone have any experience with this or any advice which to
cut off? I think that these two may
be my only chance this year and while the watermelon one is growing quicker it is only football sized at this time.
Thanks for any help
Steve
