wack them?

O.K. pumpkin people, is this going to be a problem? Let me start at the
beginning. My 920 Cole: When it was only a couple feet long, the main vine
broke off in the wind. I mounded dirt around it and it continued to grow,
slower. Now, it's doing great, I pollinated 2 pumpkins 2 days ago, and they
already look bigger than usual. Butt - they're growing straight up on 8
inch stems. They look like thick-stemmed, male blossoms with pumpkins
instead of flowers. What's up with that? Is that what is meant by growing
"stem down?" Will they fall when they get bigger, or break off, or can I
mound dirt up to the pumpkins? Or should I wack them off ?
As usual, advice will be appreciated.
