After having the tornado come through here yesterday with the
accompanying cool weather (79) and cloudy dark skies (half the day), I
thought that my measurements would be way down this morning. I was
amazed to find that the last 24 hours was my most intense growth period
to date. The 940 Mombert finally put on the 22# that it should be in a
24 hr. period (91" to 95 this morning) and my 21 day old (57") fruit
put on 4" as well. I think that Atlantic Giants only need about 1/2 of
the sun that we typically get out here and temps around 80 are
preferable to 90 as I've heard. Next year we're definitely going with
shade cloth, but where to get it cheap, that's the question. Oh well,
even at $300 I'm sure my wife will o.k. it if I promise to spend less
time in the patch. I swear, even at my low level of dedication
(compared to many of you) I'll bet that my opportunity cost for
producing these cucurbits has been around $3,000. But can money buy the
level of excitement?--doubtful. More on that at a future date.
