Another burying-the-vine question

Okay, I know how to bury a vine but my question is "when?"

If I bury the vine as it grows, how do I snake the vine when a pumpkin
shows up?  I have seen people who give their pumpkin's shoulders room by
placing the stem at the outside of a curve... how can you manipulate a
vine in such a manner if it is buried?

Also, I tried trenching one of my plants this year, but when a pumpkin
grew, the stem was so short that most of it was underground leaving the
poor pumpkin's blossom sticking straight up!
