Thanks for the post Pumpkin Master, the temps in the coastal
region of Southern Calif. have been way below normal. We should average
highs of 84 to 86 degrees and lows from 60 to 65. We normally have heat
waves into the 90's for several days at a time but this year we have not had one
day over 90 so far. This year our average low has been in the mid 50 to high
50's and the highs have been about 79 to 80 degrees. My prizewinner
pumpkins seem to love this weather but I think the AG's would prefer warmer days
and nights. The other problem I have is that most of my vines grow on a
fairly steep ivy covered hillside. The roots that form under the vines
have no where to root and I can only bury the first 10 feet or so of my vines in
good soil. This hillside only allows my plants to get about 9 hours of
direct sun a day. The lack of direct sun does not seem to have a negative
impact on my Prizewinners but may not be good for the AG's.
To Heilmanjon, I agree with you that the one ton cross
seeds from P&P should yield large pumpkins, however to date no one has been
able to find out how large the pumpkin was that produced these one ton cross
seeds and P&P is not saying. Also I have not heard about anyone having
a lot of success producing large pumpkins from these seeds. I hope when
this years results come in that these seeds ability to produce large pumpkins
will be proven. Thanks for the posts.
