Well, the season is taking a turn for the worse here in Woodridge Il.
Over the weekend someone cut a neat triangular hole in one of my
pumpkins and stole all the seeds. The little bastard then covered the
pumpkin with a bunch of leaves to hide the damage. Looks like it's time
to booby trap the patch. I weighed the empty shell at 135 lbs. As if
that wasn't enough, today I went to the patch to measure and found my
854 Holland has a blossom end split. It looks like it goes through to
the cavity, so I guess that's it. The current measurements are 105.5"c,
256.5"OTT which would put it in the low to mid 300s for weight. I also
found a soft spot on the stem of my 937 Mombert which is at 99"c and
242"OTT. The best remaining pumpkin is my Reynolds cull which is
currently 108.5"c, 242.5OTT. Hope something holds together until the
weigh-off.
Feeling like I just hit an iceberg...

I have found two things that discourage vandals. I run my woodchuck Electric
Fence with a waste high wire. I use camo netting to shade or cover the
Pumpkin to make it less of a spectacle. You can get this netting in the
Hunting section of Wal-Mart or Kmart.
