RE: first year grower
In my second year growing I slammed the brakes on all my pumpkins by over
fertilizing. I had mixed up a water soluble like peters with some potassium
nitrate and poured on too much in too strong a concentration. Growth
practically stopped and it was a couple weeks before the fruit seemed to
recover at all. It also seemed to mature them early. We walk a fine line
in trying to supply all the nutrients in optimal amounts and forms and if we
push too hard we run into problems. I think this is one area where
experience really pays off. We need to make some of these mistakes and
learn from them. Of course having the list helps so we don't have to make
all the mistakes ourselves, but personally I get the most out of doing it
myself. Lessons learned the hard way tend to be remembered much more
clearly and readily. I'm not saying that this is what has happened to yours
but it is something to consider. Perhaps backing off on the feritilizer and
continuing to water deeply and regularly will get them back in gear.
