RE: Weed Prevention Survey

I have considered using it as the weed seeds in the soil in my patch are
probably the majority of the organic matter in my soil. I worry about using
this chemical with pumpkins because of the way it acts to prevent weeds. It
produces a gas that inhibits the development of feeder roots on the weed
seedlings. This is why it is not recommended for use in areas that will be
planted with seed and is used in areas with established plants. With the
pumpkins we want the feeder roots to grow when the secondary root system on
the vines develops. I don't know if Preen would prevent that or not and I
don't have enough plants to experiment with in this manner. Another product
being used to prevent weeds is corn gluten meal. I don't know what it is in
that product that prevents them but from what I have read the way it works
is similar to what preen does in preventing the development of feeder roots.
I would love to have something that I could trust to work as weeds are what
I grow best in my pumpkin patch. I was hoping to mulch heavily this year to
help keep them down but things didn't work out as well as I had hoped for in
that area and things got away from me a bit when I went on vacation in late
July and early August. Mulching has helped and I think it is still probably
the best bet for keeping them down, I just couldn't do as much of it as I
wanted too. Let us know if you come up with something good.
