hybrids

i thought this might be an interesting question. I went to upstate ny this
weekend, and visited the farmers museum while i was there. they had an
agricultural display with examples of heirlooms, and hybrids and other
things. In the hybrid section they had a prizewinner variety, nice round
orange pumpkin, not especially large, but nice non the less. the plant had
very litlle powdery mildew on it. Not more that 20' away they had an AG,
this thing was covered with powdery mildew, i mean all the leaves were
stark white. Anybody know why? Also, i noticed other gourd varieties
doing the same thing, some were apparently more susceptible than others.
