Re: Mint Compost
Hey Barb
I feel if they say they add mint scent then they are adding mint plant.
It is hard to believe they would process Mentha gentilis,M.piperita,
M.pulegium, M.requienii, M.spicata or M.suaveolens(the mint family) simply to
use as a concentrate to scent some rotting compost. Not knowing what mint
they are using is like Russian rulet due to the fact that Mentha pulegium is
very poisonous and will kill the microbes in the soil etc.
Here in L. A. County the problem is they scent the compost with the most
common plants around eucalyptus, juniper and cypress. Smells great but
poisonous as you can amagin.I have seen things like railroad ties and painted
lumber chipped and added,So the problem with large quantity composting is you
have no idea what you are getting.
Back to the smell problem once you have it on your truck. It is only useful
after it is well rotted so if you can only get smelly stuff then you will
have to rot it yourself.
I have to rot my own compost and have two active compositors going at one
time. One is for kelp only and it can smell to high heavens so I cover the
whole top with dry grass clippings, straw or shredded leaves and it works
wonders.
Well, that's my two CENTS....
