Re: Your input is needed

Is it just me, or is Kathie Morgan stuck in 1990, and Joe Ailts stuck in 1994? I get all my emails from them with those two years as the year sent.. Weird... If that is the case, The record was only 816 pounds for AG's in 1990, and the reocrd in 1994 was 990 pounds.. I still have a shot..

Fellow growers-  I am in search of any knowledge/thoughts/opinions on the genetics of AG's.  I am not referring to familiy trees here, but actual biology.  How would I find out Mr Dill's early breeding practices?  What are the OBSERVED advantages/disadvantages of selfing or sibbing a plant?  What chacacteristics of a pumpkin are dominat/recessive? I believe us growers have come close to maximizing the environmental aspects of our hobby, such as watering, feeding, preventative maintence, etc.  But this is only 50% of the equation.  We are all headed for the same goal here-to grow the biggest pumpkin, so why not embark on a little journey to become more educated in genetics?  Until the snow melts, there is not much else to do anaways. Haven't you ever wondered how you can get a 900lb pumpkin from a 600lb X 600lb cross? Surely environmental aspects factor into the equation, but only up to 50%. Sorry for the rant, but we need to understand the importance genetics plays in our gardens.  Developing awareness to this topic will only help our cause.  If you have ANYTHING to offer to this thread, by all means do so.  And If would like to learn some basic genetics, all ya gotta do is ask!!!
