Re: Top Five Seed Selections for 2001

Top five.. hmm Lets see....
1. With heaviest being the motivating factor, the Lloyd 935 would have to be in the top 5, due main in part to it grew the world record pumpkins in 1998 and 1999. The 1092 and the 1131 both came from the Lloyd 935, and although I tried it in 2000 and only got 3 400 pounders, I think that adding the 935 to a genetic strain as a pollenator is just as important for the future of a seed line you are trying to create, as it would be trying to pop the big one.

2. The Eaton 780 has proven to be a winner for more than Al Eaton. While he loves the genetic makeup of the 780, the rest of the world has fallen in love with this one too..

3. Mettler 865 - This seed is getting closer and closer to a 1000 pounder, and IMHO - think 2001 will be the year of the 865. I predict 2 1000 pound + fruit from the Mettler 865  this year.

4. Larry Checkon's 815 for me is a super plant that has more plant vigor than any other that I have seen come fruit setting time. While the early plant vigor isnt there, once it is fruit setting time, look out. With the midseason vigor the 815 seems to have, this is one major reason it has tendancies to give stem splits and blossom end splits. But if we dont live on the edge, we will never know if it could have been. Like my buddy Mark Elsbree says to me all the time.. "If I knew these pumpkin seeds were gonna give me 700 pounders and and make it to a weighoff, I would plant grass seed tomorrow.. I want to give every attempt at growing 1000 pounders and fail 9 out of ten times pushing it to the limit, and be happy the one time I do make it to 1000 pounds.. "

5. Rockwell 879.. I pick this because you didnt specify that the top 5 seeds had to give me all pumpkins. My squash seed (from a self crossed Andersen 815) has already grandfathered the Edwards 823 this year, and set the Long Island record in 1999 by Mr Green himself.. Glenn Andrews. I plant this in spot number 5 because of my effort to be the first to have 1000 pound green and orange fruit.. I know Brett Hester will probably be the first in my eyes, but that has been a goal all along since I first got fooled by the ANdersen 815 3 seasons ago..
