Barb Kincaid Pumpkin Auction

Hi Sharon,
I am sorry, I never recieved any email from you, but did know that
Dennis Houser had contacted you about the goings on of the auction. Here
is the skinny on what transpired...

The internet has created a giant family online through one of its
mailing lists. The Mallorn company which has provided a space for
growers of giant pumpkins to communicate on a global scale has created a
bond of people very close knit. Barb Kincaid, one of the first in the
group when it started backin 1996, passed away in late November. Barb's
contribution to the group was exactly the spirit in which this group was
formed, to help new growers learn the techniques of growing, discuss
problems veteran growers may be having, and to meet new growers from
around the world that we can bond with.
Barb's efforts were always appreciated, and that shined through the
past two weeks, as a conglomerate of her world wide friend base put
together an auction of Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds and assorted other
items to benefit her grand daughter Maddie, the love of her life. Beteen
organizers Rocky Rockwell, Brad Walters, John Maston and Jim Gatewood,
the group mass emailed each other to get donations of some of the best
genetically engineered seeds in the world today.
Through those donations, Jim Gatewood put together a webpage for the
auction for all to view for one week in order to place preliminary bids.
( http://www.ipga.ws/Barb%20Kincaid%20Memorial%20Auction.htm ) After the
first week, the total bids were nearing 2000 dollars! Sunday night in
the PGPGA (Pennsylvania Giant Pumpkin Grower's Association) chat room (
http://www.PGPGA.com ) , Rocky became the online auctioneer in which
over 70 people came to bid on the lots that were up for bid to benefit
young Maddie.
After the night was over, the pumpkin community ammassed an amazing
3957 dollars through the auction, and easily over 4000 dollars for
Barb's grand daughter through straight monetary donations that had an
account set up by JohnMaston, another of the groups coordinators. Rocky,
John, Brad, and Jim had done thier job, but it ws the total effort of
the global pumpkin community that made it possible.
As for Barb, her love of the sport spilled over to the others, most of
whom she had never met.
