Subject: Proper Handling of Virus Tainted E-Mails
I just received a virus tainted email from the Mallorn list
titled - "Virus! This is the attachment that you do not open".
Even though this email was submitted to the Mallorn list with
good intent, there is a very real problem in deliberately
forwarding a virus tainted email to a mailing list.
First of all, the virus tainted email is instantly broadcast to
the 500 or so members of the list, some of whom will
inadvertently catch it. Secondly, the tainted email is added
to the mailing list archives and so becomes a time bomb waiting
to blow up in some poor bastard's face.
This email also has the virus embedded as a .wav file in the
body of the email. If you now go to the mallorn archives and
open this page the tainted .wav file is automatically sent to
your computer. If you do not have virus detection software you
may be infected just by opening the page!
Please - never forward or attach a virus tainted email and send
it to anybody, especially a mailing list. It is very bad
manners - like coughing in someone's face when you have a bad
cold. The proper protocol is to delete any virus tainted email
immediately. Never forward the virus for any reason.
