Merry Christmas and a question

Hello List, and Merry Christmas!

I have been on the list for a couple of weeks now-- I guess I missed the
secret santa thing, but I really don't have many seeds to offer anyways.

Which leads me to a question: I have been asking various people for seeds
to plant next year. I planted some mail-order seeds of unkown quality
before I knew what I was doing last year, and I was wondering how people
decide what to plant. It seems that most people have a pretty impressive
list of seeds, but you obviously can't plant too many of them. Are the
lengthy lists of seeds used primarily for trading for the seed you REALLY
want to plant? I can't see spending hundreds of dollars for a proven seed
at my experience level. No guarantee it will even germinate, right?

I would like to get some proven seeds, but I don't want to hoard seeds
either, since I will only be planting two or three next year. Any advice
for a newbie?

Thanks in advance,

Kurt
