December

The first winter months of this year follow a milder and exceptionally colourful autumn.

Bulbs: The soil is much drier than last year, therefore there is still time to plant spring flowering bulbs.
Garden Tools: Garden tools and equipment can be cleaned and their strength assessed. If they are unlikely to complete another year’s work, then invest in new ones.
Lawns: Lawns may well be covered with leaves that need to be cleared up to avoid spoiling the lawn. Care should be taken to clear up the leaves with the least amount of treading on the lawn.
Fruit Trees: December and January, when fruit trees and bushes are at their most dormant, is the very best time to apply a tar oil winter wash, which should destroy most of the pests that over-winter in the stems.

Houseplants: Foliage can begin to suffer from low light levels at this time of year; therefore it is important that houseplants receive as much natural light as possible. It is also important that they receive the correct amount of water. Plants should be having a rest and need less water, however with a warm house over the Christmas holidays, they need to be given enough water so they do not dry out and spoil.
Christmas is also a time when many houseplants are given as presents; please use the following tips to look after them:

Poinsettia
‘The’ Christmas houseplant. Requires a warm position in good light away from draughts. Watering can be tricky – water thoroughly then wait until the compost is moderately dry before watering again (use tepid water).
Cyclamen
The brightly coloured blooms of cyclamen prefer a cool, bright position but away from strong direct sunlight. The compost should be watered to keep moist at all times, but not to sit in water

Azalea
Must be kept in a cold (but frost free) bright position, but away from direct sunlight. Azaleas like to be kept moist at all times
