RE: Hottest Seeds of the 2001 Season
Congrats to Chris Michalec for being the first to name the top
5 producing seeds in 2001.
Of the 166 pumpkins grown this year that weighed over 750
pounds, 48 of them or almost 30% were grown from the following
five seeds:
723 Bobier - 17 not including the world record squash.
846 Calai - 16
705 Stelts - 6 including a 1,230 pounder
712 Kuhn - 5 including three over 1,000 pounds
914 Wentzell - 4
The 996 Emmons and the 1056 Dueck also grew 4 big ones each,
however, some of these pumpkins did not make it to weigh-off's.
The 723 Bobier and the 846 Calai were widely planted this year
with phenomenal results. The 705 Stelts, the 914 Wentzell and
the 712 Kuhn were not planted widely but still produced a high
percentage of big ones.
Other contenders in 2001 included the 903 Holland, the 611
Hester, and the 801 Stelts all with three big ones.
There are a host of other hot seeds out there that have only
been planted on a very limited basis but have shown real
potential: Three that come to mind are the 940 Mombert 98, the
845 Bobier and the 850 Wallace.
My guess is that you will hear more about the seeds listed
above next year....
