Fresh ideas 2003
Raining cats and dogs and cows in No. Cal.
Wrote the great man Olaf Riberio some questions and he took the time to
answer them......sure like this guy!!
One question I had was if the ground freezes would it kill the bad
pathogens. Yes! but only a 6- inches of ground freezes...Also some of these
pathogens are so establish and have a hard shell that they can survive.
So those that have the snow and freezes it helps take out some of the
trouble to a degree.... I would imagine its wash with the good microbes
going too. But if you add some compost in the spring you might get a head
of the bad.
I also asked if adding organic matter in the fall wouldn't also help support
the bad fungi......Answ. Not really....... competition causes
agitation.....I would imagine this would be a area to test what cultural
practices work better.
So whats new for 2003 trying some new ground----- a little bit leery as it
seems its taken years to develop the soil in the older patches. But rather
than nuke ....will try this as I have this option.
Also trying one site with all my pumpkin shells with the idea that the
nutrients used by the fruit will be returned.....maybe there is something in
there we don't know is a important nutrient.......only time will tell.......
I think Joe A. has a great article he just wrote on Hybrid vigor like his
style of writing he is good!! Its a hard thing to decipher or prove but
makes a great subject to watch and chat about.....
But this is too long already...........good cheer to all ....Any other great
new ideas for 2003!
