winter soil prep?

Okay, I checked and even McAfee clearly states you cannot be 
infected by simply opening mail.  Here's their address:

NOW I have pumpkin question.  What do you "northern" folk do for
your soil once winter has arrived?  I just covered mine with leaves
and such.  Is there anything else you can do during the winter?
