Brock:
You pose two interesting questions......when stomates open and close
relative to CO2 usage and O2 evolution and also whether its best to water
at night or during the day. Believe it or not the two are unrelated.
The greatest dilema plants face is that they have to absorb sunlight when
its sunny out. Plants really don't want to open their stomates at all
because when they do they loose water. Even if its 100% RH outside the
plant will still loose water by opening its stomates. But in order to
photosythesize they need to have a supply of CO2 and be able to exhale O2
gases. During the day the stomates have to reluctantly open in order to
allow photosynthesis to occur. Some of the Light independant parts of the
process will occur and night, so that some stomates are occassionally open
to allow CO2 in. I hope this answers the question.
As far as when to water most growers will agree that early in the AM is
best, unless you are misting for evaporitve cooling. The only reason why
AM is best is because it gives the leaves the best opportunity to dry off
before sunset. Wet leaves at sunset set you up for disease problems. Many
fungal and bacterial diseases need free moisture to infect your plants.
Water spots concentrating light and buring the leaves is an unfounded wives
tale, don't buy this line from anyone it simply doesn't happen.
