RE: Slugs

Here in the Pacific Northwet slugs are an enormous problem. I have seen
them over 6 inches long and an inch wide. You could put a little saddle
on them and ride them if they weren't so slimey. There are several
commercial products available to poison them like Corry's slug and snail
death, and others whose names I cannot think of right now. They are all
fairly effective however they are also attractive to dogs and you could
poison your pet if you are not careful where you put it. Beer works if
you put it in tuna cans around the garden when they go in for a drink
they drown. Use the cheapest beer you can get ahold of they aren't
picky. You can also chop or smash them. Ducks and geese will also eat
them if you can trust them around the pumpkin plants. The slugs are
more of a problem for the young plants and pumpkins. Once the pumpkin
has some size to it they can't do much damage and the prickles on the
stems and leaves seem to discourage them from eating those parts of the
plants. I have also heard they have an aversion to copper. If you put
down a strip of copper around the plant you want to protect they won't
cross it. I have not tested that myself though. Good luck! I hate the
nasty things and am a sworn enemy to them. I'll be interested to hear
any other remedies for them.
