Hi Rocky
I had a good look through your home page. Loved the picture of mason and
yourself at the beach. Looks a bit like here - is this where you live?
My two vines are going great. I am cutting and burying as many basal
runners as I can after I have spread them out espalier fashion in the
'hot spot' - where all the sheep poo is. There are two main runners on
each plant which I have going in seperate directions with the aid of
bamboo pegs. Fred has two female flowers pollinated on December 26th and
28th respectively. I will see what happens though it is early days yet.
Wilma is a bit behind but has much fatter stems. I am hoping 'Son of
Jabba' in Kawerau will have some good pollen which Tracey can courier
down to pollinate Wilma.
The weather has 'turned dog' with cool weather and heavy rain tonight.
Christmas day we had torrential rain that blocked up some water intakes
on the main Opuanke water scheme blocking the filters. I had to organise
the press and radio stations all Xmas afternoon as the drinking water
became contaminated. This all means that the pumpkin growth has slowed
down somewhat but not a problem, (at least I hope not). I will have to
keep an eye on fungal problems. I did get an irrigation system as an
Xmas gift. This sprays a very fine mist that will hopefully warm up any
water first. The straw mulch has meant very warm soil temperatures so
that is a good thing at least.
We also recieved some tadpoles of the Whistling Tree Frog - you had
better believe it. Almost as good as the NZ Gopher Jack but it's true I
tell you.
Jack - I have finished Pumpkins are Orange and I know I have said it
before but this really is a great book, really funny and truly a slice
of life. I can relate to all the smells at the State Fair - that is what
I like about our A&P shows (Agricultural and Pastoral). Plus all the
people you meet, a bit like the Louis Armstrong sond "I see friends
shakin hands ........". I will pass the book on to Hydroponic Peter for
his education and entertainment.
A happy new year to you all and a successful and safe season ahead.
See you next year.
John
