Re: Slow Day
The weather hasn't been too bad here in Perth. high 20's and low
thirties the past couple of days and early into the new year. The Xmas
period was shocking with high 30's and low 40's. Boxing day was a new
record of 42.something. I'm not too sure what all this means on the
Fahrenheit scale, but I know 100F is about 37 degrees C. Pollination
is looking doubtful at the moment but hopefully we'll have a cool
patch of weather coming soon. On boxing day, I tried pollinating my
first flower, but it has since shrunk up and died (not surprisingly).
I tried again two days ago and again this morning so fingers crossed.
I still have a bit of time up my sleeve, but I would like to get some
started asap.
re: keeping flowers cool using ice etc, would a water misting type
thing work, or would/could it have an adverse effect on the female
flower? On some of the really hot days, I have tried a misting system
that seems to keep it relatively stress free, but I'm thinking maybe
fruit won't set if it is too moist etc. any ideas?
Another quick question - can pumpkin leaves get sunburnt? My patch is
pretty much full sun in the arvo when it is really hot and a number of
the leaves have brown shrivelled edges. I thought it was alternaria
leaf spot like I had initially, but they don't seem to be responding
to the fungicide treatment. Also, it seems to correspond with the hot
weather - which is not ideal fungus growing weather (ie really hot,
dry and windy). I'll give it a couple of more days and see what the
result is - I'm not overly concerned as it is mainly the old leaves
that are affected. Do leaves just get old and die? or is there some
other factor.
cheers
john.
