Cultivate soil deeply before planting

When tilling around plants keep back several feet from advancing vines,
roots spread out ahead of vines.

Avoid walking around plants- it can cause soil compaction and hinder root
development- lay down wide boards to walk on

Know your enemies before planting(insect, fungus, virus etc.)

Use preventative measures with plants. Often it is easier to prevent
disease rather than treat
